Why Help People?

I’ve always been a religious person. My relationship with God has always driven my motivation to do my best and given me purpose for my life. I can remember as a little girl just knowing my ambition is to help people. It is a feeling of certainty in my chest that I do not complicate. I know my goal in life is to love to my absolute capacity and alleviate any pain in the world that I can.

In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.

James 4:17, NIV

After reflecting on verses such as the one quoted above, I have focused my academic career on the path where I can best represent my faith. I do not just want to say I want to help people, I want to show through my actions that I will make a change in the world. Because of this, I have been determined to become a nurse here at the University of Mary Washington.

By fulfilling others needs, I will fulfill my longing in my life to show Christ’s love the same way I have experienced it. I want to show patients that love should not determined by race, sex, sexual orientation, culture, etc. True love from Christ loves every single person no matter what.

Helping people gives me a similar satisfaction that giving presents to others does. The feeling knowing that you are providing even just a sliver to joy drives me every single day! 🙂
